Pre-frenectomy care refers to therapy that takes place before a frenum release procedure. The goal is to prepare the mouth and body for optimal healing and function after the procedure. Occupational therapists assess and support areas such as body and mouth symmetry, alignment, head posture, gross motor development, oral motor skills, and oral desensitization. This preparation helps ensure that the child’s body and oral structures are ready for the changes that occur following a frenectomy.
Why Is Pre- and Post-Frenectomy Treatment Important?
Pre- and post-frenectomy therapy play a key role in helping children achieve the best functional outcomes. This specialized approach helps to:
Maximize existing oral sensory-motor function
Acclimate the child to oral sensory-motor treatment and stimulation
Ensure tolerance for post-operative exercises before the procedure
Teach and practice oral exercises inside the mouth
Establish a functional baseline
Provide neuromuscular re-education
Improve range of motion and strength
Prevent re-attachment of the frenulum
By focusing on both preparation and recovery, therapy supports improved feeding, speech, and oral motor development while promoting long-term success after the procedure.
